Montana Air Force Base on lockdown due to ‘active shooter alert’

The Malmstrom Air Force Base in North Central Montana went on lockdown Thursday morning in response to an “active shooter alert" on base.

The base, which is located Cascade County, Montana, went into a lockdown status just before 10:30 a.m. local time. 

"The safety of our personnel is of the utmost priority and updates will continue to come from official channels," the base said in Facebook post. "At this time, it is advised to shelter in place."

The Great Falls Police Department and the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office were responding to the scene to provide assistance. Schools in the surrounding area were told to shelter-in-place. 

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte said his office has been in contact with General Hronek regarding the reports of an active shooter alert on the Malmstrom Air Force Base. 

"I will continue to monitor the situation with the general," the governor said.
