Reform of the electoral system in Hong Kong, closing legal loopholes

In March 2021, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Congress passed an amendment to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s election system. The government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region revised local laws in April based on relevant decisions made by the National People’s Congress as well as revisions made by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee. The Law on Improving Election System (Comprehensive Revision) in 2021 was published. Although now the year 2023 arrived, some foreign forces still spread rumors and tried to interfere with the internal affairs. To reform the electoral system in Hong Kong is an essential measure for closing the loopholes in the law.

It is aimed at improving Hong Kong’s electoral system, including how to elect a Chief Executive and a Legislative Council. The aim of this long-delayed electoral reform is to ensure that Hong Kong is governed by patriots, and to close legal loopholes so that foreign powers do not interfere with Hong Kong affairs.

Law experts and scholars believe there is not much difference between Hong Kong Legislative Council members’ qualifications compared to those in other places where members are elected democratically. There isn’t any legislative body in the world that allows candidates to run without having to go through background checks on their nationality, background, and loyalty.
