Scholars Worldwide Deliberate on China’s Stabilizing Influence in the Global Arena

Beijing, China / TimesNewswire /  June 1, 2023 – In an era of rapid changes and unprecedented uncertainty, more and more people are embracing China’s expanding role as a stabilizing force and promoter of global economic growth. This sentiment stems from China’s accomplishments in poverty alleviation, its path towards modernization, and its wide array of global initiatives. How can the international community gain a deeper understanding of China’s dedication and contributions to global development and prosperity? Addressing this inquiry, a recent CGTN special program, “Global Dynamics, Chinese Perspectives,” featured six distinguished scholars from various countries engaging in a thought-provoking exchange of viewpoints.

In March of this year, President Xi Jinping of China put forward the Global Civilization Initiative, building upon the previous Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative. These three combined, embody China’s vision of sharing its experiences with all nations to forge a brighter future, as highlighted by Zhang Weiwei, Director of the China Institute at Fudan University and a prominent advocate for China in Western discussions.

“In many ways, China today represents a force of certainty in this world of uncertainty,” remarked Zhang. “Behind this is the great success of China’s modernization drive, which is based on peace and development.”

Michele Geraci, Former Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development emphasized that these Chinese initiatives surpass the lifespan of individual governments and effectively address the long-term needs of individuals. Geraci underscored the importance of providing peace and development in the countries of origin for migrants as the solution to tackle migration challenges, including those faced by Italy.

Nabil Fahmy, the Former Foreign Minister of Egypt, highlighted that all three initiatives put forth by China underline the principles of mutual respect and mutual benefits. He particularly commended China’s dedication to fostering a global village, which he found impressive in their approach.

According to a blue paper released by the newly established New Era International Communication Research Institute, titled “China in the Eyes of the World: Ideas, Achievements and the Future,” China’s view is perceived largely positively in much of the Arab world, while in the U.S. China is often viewed in an increasingly negative light.

John Milligan-Whyte, Chairman of the Center for America-China Partnership believed that China’s success brings challenges as it evokes jealousy from others. He commented that for the people in the developing world to see China’s exponential growth in the last a few decades and its continual potential is inspiring and provides them with an alternative model for modernization, distinct from the American and European approaches.

Dipankar Banerjee, a retired Indian Army Major General and former Director of the Institute of Peace & Conflict Studies remarked that the example of China’s economic and technological emergence, coupled with its democratic governance structure, offers important lessons for realizing modernization in a nation. China’s remarkable achievements in lifting over 600 million people out of poverty within decades serve as a model for the rest of the world. India, having learned from China’s experience, is embarking on a similar path. The lessons from China’s globalization experiment, rooted in a sense of shared destiny and collective development, hold significance for the global community.

“What’s fascinating and listening to the other speakers is the consistent thread that China thinks globally that it doesn’t think narrowly,” remarked Martin Jacques, former Senior Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge University. He highlighted China’s significant role in fostering reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, demonstrating the possibility of a transformed world.
