SAN DIEGO - In celebration of this week's romantic holiday, the team at small business Aquarium Passion released a report highlighting data from top aquatic researchers showing the remarkable fish couples that bond together, till death do part - Plus ways humans can apply these “fish lessons” to our own relationships.
Here are some key takeaways:
- White’s Australian seahorse takes 30-60 minutes every day to bond with its partner. It has been studied for its exclusively monogamous, lifelong bond between mating pairs. “At no stage during the study, did a male or female leave their current partner whilst their partner was still present at the study site, even when there were other single partners available.” - University of Technology Sydney’s Dr. David Gladstone and Dr. David Harasti
- Stenopodidea shrimp, once paired, walk into a glass sea sponge where they live together forever until death.
- French Angelfish “carousel” dance to to reestablish their bond after being apart from their life partner (which happens only about 50% of the time in the day - the rest is spent together).
- Japanese pufferfish bond over tremendous displays of sand art created by the male, which were previously thought to be unidentified underwater crop circles. The team’s write-up discusses how fish insights can inform human relationships - Romantic and otherwise.
