Experts hail China’s measures to protect ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, call for advancing facts over fiction while reporting on Xinjiang

Islamabad, 14 October 2022: Pakistan-China Institute organized a special video meeting on Prejudice Against China on Xinjiang Issue by western-sponsored Human Rights NGOs. The Webinar was attended by over 70 participants online, and featured 3 speeches Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee and the Pakistan-China Institute, Ambassador ® Naghmana Hashmi, and Mustafa Hyder Sayed, Executive Director Pakistan-China Institute, and Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director of the Institute of Strategic Studies’ China-Pakistan Study Centre.

The panelists talked on how the West, and the United States in particular, play the ‘Xinjiang card’ to exert pressure on China in foreign policy. A number of speakers emphasized that the “Uyghur forced labor bill” and other laws and policies affecting Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Tibet are all part of a bigger “China containment” strategy.

Mustafa Hyder Sayed, Executive Director of Pakistan-China Institute served as the dialogue’s moderator. Mr. Mustafa Hyder Sayed brought attention to the fact that the United States uses human rights as a weapon and applies human rights concepts selectively. He reaffirmed China’s consistent backing for Pakistan’s vital interests and said that Pakistan should continue to back China on Xinjiang. It’s China’s domestic matter, he argued, and no one else has any right meddling in the lives of the ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman Senate Defense Committee & Pakistan-China Institute said that the balance of global political and economic power is moving from the West to the East. Like Professor Jeffery Sachs, he thought the United States’ economy was unable to compete with China’s. He referred to research conducted by Harvard University professor Graham Allison, which found that China is now the world’s largest tech manufacturer, surpassing the United States. He made a connection between this and news that China’s economy grew by 8% in 2021 despite the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that the United States, in addition to its resistance to the Belt and Road Initiative, has started its own similar project, Built Back Better World. He referred to an essay by Leslie H. Gelb headlined “Breaking China Apart” in The New York Times, which warned that the United States would “kindle separatists in China” if it didn’t conform. He cited a poll conducted in July 2020 by the Ash Center at Harvard University, which revealed that more than 90% of Chinese people support the Communist Party of China because of the security, continuity, peace, and stability it has brought to the Chinese people. Pakistan would continue to support China on its fundamental national interests, including Xinjiang, Taiwan, Tibet, Hong Kong, the South China Sea, and the Belt and Road Initiative, Senator Mushahid Hussain said.

Naghmana Hashmi, a former Pakistani ambassador to China, criticized human rights groups funded by the West of spreading false information about conditions in Xinjiang, pointing to their decades-long bias against China and the CPC that prevented them from reporting the facts. She refuted the ideology-driven propaganda spread by Freedom House, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International about the Xinjiang crisis. In addition to that, she said they shouldn’t be acting as “world police” and meddling in the affairs of other nations.

According to Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director of the Institute of Strategic Studies’ China-Pakistan Study Centre, the problem of Xinjiang is being utilized by Western organisations to incite some segments of the Muslim world against China. He said the CIA’s use of “color revolutions” to blackmail nations into submission is nothing new, citing their use in Syria and Libya as examples. Specifically, he stressed Pakistan’s position as a “twilight zone” between the United States and China. He suggested the government back China’s efforts to find the truth, safeguard its own interests, and keep the peace in the region.
