Desert & Delta Safaris celebrates 40 years of commitment to African leadership in the Botswanan tourism industry

By: PRLog

Desert & Delta Safaris harnesses 'power of local' to empower local communities

MAUN, Botswana - July 18, 2022 - PRLog -- In 2022, Desert & Delta Safaris is celebrating their 40th Anniversary as the leading safari company in Botswana. For four decades, Desert & Delta has been widely regarded and respected as an international model of ecotourism development leading the way in the development of jobs for local Botswanans, career empowerment for women, and conversion of much of their safari fleet into electric vehicles and solar-powered boats to better protect Botswana, the wildlife, and the environment.

Desert & Delta Safaris' history is rooted in the growing tourism industry of Botswana – the opening of Botswana's first 5-star lodge, Chobe Game Lodge; Chobe Holdings LTD becoming the first safari company registered on the Botswana Stock Exchange in 1999; and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's visit to Chobe Game Lodge, pronouncing their wedding vows on the banks of Chobe River.

Aside from its storied history, Desert & Delta has made a commitment to empower the local Botswanan community, including locals of color, by focusing on local ownership, local management, and local staff. Desert & Delta's business philosophy ensures revenue stays in Botswana allowing for reinvesting in the community and fundamentally puts a mark on Botswana as a country with a rich tourism offering. Local is the way of the future for the African safari, and Desert & Delta is on the cutting edge.

MC Odumetse, a Botswanan who occupies the role of managing director of Chobe Holdings, is one of the very few local Africans in the position of leadership he occupies for a company the size of Chobe Holdings (Desert & Delta's umbrella company).

"We have so much to be proud of," comments MC Odumetse. "From launching Africa's only all-female guiding team at Chobe Game Lodge, to becoming one of the first luxury safari circuits to be managed by local citizens."

In September 2021, the group purchased Nxamaseri Island Lodge allowing guests to visit the incredible cultural heritage site of Tsodilo Hills. The UNESCO World Heritage cultural site has received little international tourism attention, despite its incredible cultural and anthropological significance with art writers and commentators calling Tsodilo Hills the 'Louvre of the Desert.'

"Botswana is a world-renowned wildlife tourism destination, and we want to use our resources and network to bring awareness to some of the remarkable cultural heritage we have. Tsodilo Hills hosts over 4,000 amazingly preserved ancient rock art paintings dating back thousands of years. If a place like Tsodilo Hills was in any other country that didn't have such a thriving safari industry, it would be one of the most popular places to visit," remarks MC Odumetse.

Starting with just two camps, Camp Okavango and Camp Moremi, Desert & Delta Safaris founded one of the first luxury safari circuits in Botswana. Featuring nine premier safari properties, Desert & Delta Safaris lodges are set in pristine wildlife environments across the game reserves, national parks, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites of northern Botswana and eastern Namibia.

From humble beginnings when Botswana was barely known, with no infrastructure or trained staff or resources to where they are today – a world-class destination leading the way in female empowerment and run and managed by the citizens of the country – Desert & Delta Safaris has always been a company to innovate and not imitate.
