Leaders Igniting Generational Healing and Transformation Host First Virtual LIGHT Festival In An Effort To Center The Public Around Public Health There is no doubt that in today’s world, public health has become a hot topic that needs to be addressed. By bringing the public together with public health researchers, LIGHT believes that open dialogue can begin, and critical conversations can be the catalyst to reshape the future.

Saint Louis, MO – June 15, 2022 – Leaders Igniting Generational Healing and Transformation (LIGHT) has formally announced their first annual virtual LIGHT Festival that will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022. LIGHT is an anti-establishment, anti-racist space for critical conversations and dialogue in public health that publishes creative and literary works, such as art, letters, stories (both fiction and nonfiction), and poetry, from diverse authors and artists, particularly from populations underrepresented in public health. LIGHT aims to advance work that pushes the margins of public health and creates healthy conversations around public health.

With the goal of bridging the divide between the public and public health researchers, LIGHT is holding their first festival which will allow individuals to connect through art, letter, stories, and poetry as lived experiences of healing and health. Everyone in the field and all members of the public — artists, poets, practitioners, storytellers, and the like — are invited to attend.

LIGHT recently called for submissions for their first issue of the biannual literary journal in public health. The finalists will be announced during the festival, and their submissions will be featured in the journal that will be released in early 2023.

The event will start on Friday at 8AM and run until 6pm (CDT). The day will be full of amazing speakers, workshop leaders, yoga instructors, and a panel of public health researchers all focused on various creative mediums — poetry, illustration and amination, comic creation, culinary art, storytelling, and mindfulness.

During a recent interview, one of LIGHT’s managing editors, Dr. Juliet Iwelunmor at Saint Louis University, College of Public Health and Social Justice said, “We are very excited about this festival. With everything going on in the world whether abroad or right here in our own backyard, opening a dialogue and having conversations about public health is something that needs to happen, and it needs to happen now. Instead of waiting for things to get worse, we are taking the steps to bring everyone together again and begin the healing process by centering the public around public health. It’s a conversation that needs to be had, and inclusivity is the top priority. Everyone’s voice needs to be heard.”
