2022 Parents Tips On How To Approach College Applications Amidst Omicron

By: PRLog

GERMANTOWN, Md. - Jan. 6, 2022 - PRLog -- As we enter 2022, college admissions are top of mind for most students and parents. As we all continue to navigate through the pandemic, please note how the college admissions process is evolving and what you can expect.

What is important to know about college admissions this year?

College admissions is governed by enrollment management which means schools are trying to predict how many kids they want vs how many kids they need, and this will affect intuitional revenue, operating budget, endowment, and yes, admission.

To get ahead of the game, parents need to take the following steps:

If the student is a sophomore (10th Grade): parents need to remember that kids need to get engaged in school whether it is in athletics or the arts, clubs, community service. They cannot be a kid that goes to school and comes home. We have been sitting at home because of Covid but kids need to start branching out. Colleges want to see how the kid maximizes their time being restricted due to the covid and do not want to see kids going to school and just retreating to their computer.

If the student is a junior (11th Grade): many schools are considering having tests optional again this year, so kids may not have to take standardized tests in 2022. They should still prepare and expect to, and they will have the choice to submitting or not. Start paying attention to how colleges are doing college visits (virtually or on-campus). With Omicron, colleges are going to be welcoming visitors in a different flow.

If the student is a senior (12th Grade): ''parents, do not let your kid slack off''. Even if they are accepted to college, it is very important that they maintain their grades and continue to do well in school because colleges want the person to be coming into the fall be the same person they admitted.

Colleges' landscape is hard to understand. Lots of data but also lots of wrong information. Working with a college counselor (student's high school or a private counselor) is critical for students to navigate the system successfully. College counselors help the student build a balanced college list. By understanding the data behind college acceptances, the college counselor can identify strengths and interests and make a list that helps the student really explore themselves and explore their options.

Essay writing is the second major benefit a student gets by working with a college counselor. Many colleges, particularly because of the elimination of standardized testing, are putting more emphasis on the essay than ever. At Strategic Admissions Advice, we offer a course about how to write an awesome college essay and Shereem personally reads every kid essay and offers them feedback. College essay process should not be neglected. It is very important that a counselor can give the student guidance about what they should write about, how to outline it, and give proper feedback.

Finally, a college counselor helps getting filtered information. Too often people get inaccurate information about college admission process. College counselors do personal development and stay abreast of the issues which makes them be very discerning and strategic in the way they give advice. Filter for information that is helpful but also about information that is not.

Strategic Admissions Advice reports having several students admitted into top colleges in 2021 such as Duke University, Brown University, Cornell, Indiana, Dartmouth, and Southern Methodist. ''We are proud of all our students because we believe we found a great match'' says Shereem Herndon-Brown. For 2022, Shereem Herndon-Brown sees a couple of rising colleges. He is impressed by Davidson College (NC), Wake Forest (NC), Claremont McKenna College (CA), Carleton College (MN). His new favorites are the University of Missouri (MI) and the University of Miami (FL) because of the academic changes they are making.

Not every university works for every student. When selecting a college, it is important to consider cost, location, major, and career.
