Electric car maker Edison Motors signed an agreement with hydrogen provider Plug Power to develop and bring to market a hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric city bus.

Plug Power’s 125kW ProGen fuel cell engine will be used to power to Edison Motors’ electric bus platform. The companies expect to have a fuel cell electric bus prototype completed by the second half of 2022. The could launch a mass-market platform by the first half of 2023.

(Plan to attend “Green Hydrogen Hubs: The Key to Achieving Multisectoral Decarbonization” at PowerGen International in Dallas on January 28.)

The bus project will start the planned long-term cooperation between Korea-based Edison Motors and Plug Power, said Young-kwon Kang, chairman of Edison Motors. The two companies plan to partner on other mobility applications including trucks, vessels, drones, and personal air vehicles. The fuel cell-powered electric buses could be first sold in Korea before expanding to other markets.

Plug Power has deployed more than 50,000 fuel cell systems for e-mobility, and is one of the largest buyers of liquid hydrogen.
