Hundreds Participate in Viral Social Media Video Campaign Towards Ending Addiction Stigma for 20+ million American Families

Norwalk, CT – A viral social media campaign is spreading to educate and end the stigma of addiction. Just days ago, a group of only 18 volunteers from Ascension Leadership Academy launched an “End the Stigma” awareness campaign using videos to educate the public on how words we use around addiction can lead those struggling to not seek treatment.

“Our words can make a massive impact on whether or not those suffering seek support and treatment. You can do your part to support those living with substance use disorder by using empowering language which does not cause accusation and shame” said Amber Bruse, Co-captain of the 5th virtual leadership class of Ascension Leadership Academy.

The “End the Stigma” campaign includes making a video, posting it on social media and tagging five (5) other people. Supporting Shatterproof, a non-profit dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in America, the viral video trend is asking people to take a pledge to change the way they speak about addiction and is teaching basic vocabulary changes that counter stigma, such as saying “substance use” instead of “substance abuse.” There have already been many pledges and videos shared, with a goal of 1,000.

Here are some videos:

Erenly Agosto, Head of “End the Stigma” Campaign

Dani Apgar, Press Secretary & Co-Captain, “End the Stigma” Campaign

Valerie Smith, “End the Stigma” pledger

“We are ecstatic that thanks to the 5th virtual class of Ascension Leadership Academy so many people are learning about how they can help end the stigmas associated with addiction. Especially in the wake of the stress and isolation caused by COVID, people need to hear that it is okay to seek help. Changing our language and ending the stigma of this disease will save lives,” said Gary Mendell, founder & CEO, Shatterproof.

The time is now, for twenty two million Americans who are worthy of change and the 200 million who can effect it.
