This has led to a boom in installing external cables and sockets into outbuildings for professionals. Running power to external buildings needs to be done safely using armoured cable at a minimum depth, so a keen amateur gardener doesn’t slice through the mains cable with a spade. As well as power, many people want multiple sockets as well. These days it’s not just a computer, but monitors, printer and chargers as well – not to mention lighting and heaters. In addition people are looking to install EV chargers which are located at a remote garage, not necessarily next to the house”
It is important to seek professional advice when installing power to external buildings, to ensure that the wiring is safe and protected with modern circuit breakers. Having expert advice will also be useful to decide on the wire capacity (gauge) for future use. For example a shed or outbuilding may be fine in the summer, but will need to be running heaters in the winter, which are power-hungry, and the wire and breaker capacity needs to be planned for. An armoured cable of 10mm 3-core SWA cable (Steel Wired Armoured cable) is typical to provide enough capacity, but it depends on the application and distance from building to consumer unit.
