Holiday Restocking the Reverse Engineering of Holiday Picking According to Carsten Funke of Picavi Pick by Vision

Carsten Funke, CEO at Picavi USA, the leader in pick-by-vision technology, recently discussed holiday restocking challenges and the need for best practice picking in Forbes. Read the full article here.

According to Funke, most distribution center and fulfillment center managers are planning how to best manage the holiday shipping challenges this time of year. SKUs are checked and double-checked; FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) are positioned to ensure the least amount of walk-time. AGV (automated guided vehicles) are routed to process incoming and outgoing packages. The demand anticipated for holiday 2021 is greater than ever, particularly with the resurgence of COVID throughout the U.S.

The idea of differentiation among eCommerce sellers and exceptional fulfillment may help to secure the customer, the sale, but has little to do with the fact the return rate can be 5 times greater with online sales. Generous return policies may generate more sales however eCommerce return rates post-holidays are as high as 50% above normal following the holiday gift-giving season.

“It’s not merely the returns, it is the very process of restocking. The same techniques for efficient picking, must be executed in restocking. When warehouse and distribution centers are set up, particularly for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), the 80-20 rule applies. Specifically, picks can be organized to ensure the velocity and frequency of items ordered are arranged reducing walk time, physical strain (reaching for product), and rapid shipping,” added Funke.

Funke is a proud member of the Forbes Business Council, an invitation-only organization for successful business leaders and executives who are selected for the council based on the depth and diversity of experience in the business development space.
