Process Parameters Unveils Its Range of Thermocouples

Process Parameters Unveils Its Range of Thermocouples and also discusses what thermocouples are and how they can be beneficial to industrial temperature measurement.

Maidenhead, United Kingdom - August 24, 2021 /PressCable/

Pressure and industrial temperature-measurement specialists from Process Parameters Ltd. reached out today about their range of thermocouples and wanted to discuss what thermocouples are and how they work.

Thermocouples have been around for a long time, primarily owed to the discovery of the Seebeck effect way back in 1821. Thermocouples are two dissimilar metallic wires, joined together to form a junction. When the junction is either heated or cooled, a small voltage is generated in the electrical circuit, which can then be measured—this corresponds to temperature.

To put it simply, thermocouples are sensors that are used to measure temperature. As mentioned, the design of a thermocouple usually consists of two wires joined together at one end and connected to an instrument capable of measuring thermocouple input. They can measure a wide spectrum of temperature, however, the range depends on the type of thermocouple used.

For example, a Type K thermocouple is one that’s found across various applications, primarily due to its expansive temperature range capabilities. The maximum continuous temperature is approximately 1100 degrees celsius.

The Type K thermocouple is one of the more popular versions. It’s inexpensive without compromising accuracy or reliability and can also cover a wide temperature range.

Another common example is the Type J thermocouple. Typically used in the plastics industry, this thermocouple type has a smaller temperature range than the Type K—only 0-600ºC—but cost-wise, they are very similar to the Type K. The Type J is a popular thermocouple that is commonly used to monitor temperatures of inert materials and in vacuum applications. This thermocouple is susceptible to oxidisation so is not recommended for damp conditions or low temperature monitoring.

Thermocouples can be made to suit almost any application. They can be robust, responsive, and built to measure a very wide temperature range. To find out more about thermocouples or to see Process Parameters’s range of thermocouples, see the following link: https://www.processparameters.co.uk/
