It’ll come as no surprise that the use of real world data within health innovation is a trending topic. Doctors, pharmaceutical companies and biotech all believe in RWD for improving health outcomes.
RWD is the term given to data relating to patient health status and/or the delivery of health care, which has been routinely collected from a variety of sources including electronic health records, claims and billing but also patient generated data both via in home-use settings and gathered from medical and other health monitoring devices.
People would all be healthier if researchers had access to the wealth of information that is available on diseases, comorbidities, and biomarkers. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, real-world data have been discovered to be powerful. Leading clinical trial organizations decided to condense the discovery process in light of the crisis. The iterative process was not feasible since information from a small-scale trial was required before moving forward.
In order to generate smart hypotheses that would allow them to shortcut the traditional process, they had to draw on data from COVID and other studies, registries and EHRs. RWDs and RWEs, which were generated by combining several sources, allowed researchers to answer more questions such as what the incubation period is or what the natural history and clinical presentation of the disease is.
