Houston Native Brings Award-Winning "Protectress" to Worldfest

By: PRLog
HOUSTON - April 16, 2018 - PRLog -- Hailed as "Wonder Woman meets Game of Thrones," fantasy action film "Protectress" makes its Texas debut at Worldfest Houston's 51st Annual International Independent Film Festival and has already won a coveted Remi Award.

During battle, a healer duels with her mortal enemy in an unsettling form, facing an impossible choice that will forever forge her destiny as a warrior.

Joanna Ke, who wrote, produced, and stars in the film, comes to Worldfest from Hollywood, but began her journey as a filmmaker at Langham Creek High School, where she made and starred in her first film as part of a class assignment in the theater production program.

"I'm so excited to have 'Protectress' showing in my hometown, especially because it's the first time one of my films is screening in Houston," Ke says. Training for four months prior to filming, she performs her own stunts and learned sword fighting for the fantasy action.

Ke has come a long way from writing and producing her first works in the Langham Creek theater department. In Los Angeles, she also works as a professional script reader and credits her experience as a story analyst and actress for spurring her to create "Protectress."

"I got fed up with the roles I was seeing for women in Hollywood. The writing isn't out there for dynamic female characters. I see it on one end as a reader and the resulting character breakdowns as an actress, so I created 'Protectress' to showcase what we normally don't get to see on screen - a diverse hero and women in leadership roles." Diversity was paramount both in front of and behind the camera. Director America Young helms the short.

The female empowerment film will have its Texas premiere on Sunday, April 22, at 1:00 p.m. in the Thriller/Suspense block of films with Joanna Ke in attendance, followed by a Q&A.

Ke is currently in development of the feature film that the short is a proof of concept for. Keep up to date with future screenings and sign up for "Protectress" news and updates at www.protectressfilm.com
