Weekly Free Family Activities
PRLog - April 21, 2015 - NEW YORK -- On Sunday, April 26 the Randall’s Island Park Alliance (RIPA) will kick off a year of expanded free community events with our annual bird watching event, “Birding Bonanza.”

Activities will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. First stop is the Park’s Icahn Stadium, where visitors will be welcomed with refreshments and bird-themed crafts and games. From there, groups will leave at regular intervals to explore the neighboring Little Hell Gate Inlet tidal salt marsh and freshwater wetlands and look for native and migratory birds, led by expert guides from RIPA and NYC Audubon.

“Birding Bonanza” is best suited for nature lovers ages 7 and older, accompanied by an adult. Binoculars and bird guides will be provided to all.

“We are so excited to collaborate once again with NYC Audubon to encourage the community to explore the Park’s 18 acres of natural habitat, and to appreciate the birds which live and forage here, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities,” said RIPA President Aimee Boden.

"The wetlands that have been created through the waterfront stewardship work of the Randall's Island Park Alliance provide critical habitat for migratory and resident birds,” said NYC Audubon Program and Advocacy Manager Darren Klein. “New York City Audubon is proud to partner with RIPA to provide birding walks and educational events that celebrate these fantastic achievements and put New Yorkers in touch with the wonders of the natural world."

“Birding Bonanza” is only the first of a full season of weekly family-friendly events at Randall’s Island Park. Coming up next is the Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday, May 2, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The free event will offer an afternoon of spring activities including face painting, kite flying, crafts and games, and a butterfly release. Live entertainment will include Japanese drumming and dance performances, and locally-made Japanese pottery will be on display.

“Our annual Cherry Blossom Festival is one of our most popular weekend events,” said RIPA Co-Chair Nancy Neff. “This year in particular, after such a long winter, we look forward to celebrating the advent of spring with the Park’s neighbors and friends.”

“Following an intensive planning process in 2014, the Randall’s Island Park Alliance has scheduled exciting weekly events throughout 2015,” said RIPA Co-Chair Jerry Goldman. “We are especially pleased to offer free events accessible via the 103rd Street Footbridge and the Park’s pathways, so that local families can take full advantage of all this wonderful resource has to offer.”

About Randall’s Island Park Alliance:

The Randall's Island Park Alliance (RIPA) works with the City and local communities to provide an innovative and exciting destination through a wide range of sports venues, cultural events and environmental exploration. As the dedicated steward of Randall's Island Park, the Alliance sustains, maintains, develops and programs the Park to support the wellbeing of all New Yorkers; the Island now annually welcomes over 3 million visitors. With the completion of 60 state-of-the-art playing fields in 2010, RIPA established the Park as host to more than half of Manhattan’s playing fields. The Alliance has also developed Icahn Stadium, an IAAF-accredited track & field facility; the 20-court Sportime Tennis Center; a renovated Golf Center; nearly 20 acres of renovated wetlands; an Urban Farm; and miles of waterfront pathways. RIPA also works to fund, implement and expand youth programs to make the most of these remarkable facilities. In partnership with dozens of local public schools and community-based organizations, RIPA provides nearly 20,000 children with free sports and environmental education activities each year.
