The promotion people listened, sent it for a focus group study to several radio stations and then Mr. Metzgar decided to put the record out through CDX in early 2013. After six months of the hardest work that a promotion team has ever done on a record, the Contemporary Christian group that sounds like Randy Owen & Alabama have their record in the NMW charts sitting at #9 with a bullet. There’s still heavy upward movement behind the single release. Promoters expect the song to go into what is called the “Recurrent Top-40” list in 2 weeks as the group’s next single hits radio stations entitled “Gonna Give You Praise.”
Doug Newnum grew up in church, got started singing in a quartet at the age of 10 years old. His aunt Delores put together 3 girls and Doug Newnum and they harmonized. That’s what you notice about the band today, their incredible harmony. Newnum states, “While I was singing in my first group Homeward Bound I dreamed of being in music full time.” After opening for the Cathedrals, becoming the lead songwriter for Northern Gold Quartet, a solo project and 3 albums with SOS Renewal, the newly nominated Songwriter Of The Year Doug Newnum feels like he is starting to see some success. Newnum married his childhood sweetheart Debbie and the couple have four children, Amanda, Jared, Ethan and Chelsea. He says he loves to play golf but he never does because he just doesn’t have any time. His plate is so full now that his wife is thinking about separate vacations. The couple put their faith in God as a priority, their family and children are a priority and told our Entertainment Headline News reporter that “With God’s blessings anything is possible.” That is certainly true in the music business. An article that recently appeared in www.radioinfo.com by the former head of Billboard Nashville states that the average major label spends $375,000 in direct payments to get a song into Top-40 and $1.5 million to get a song to go #1 in the pop charts nationally. So far Doug Newnum & SOS Renewal have spent absolutely zero getting the airplay they have gotten.
Their airplay has been generated the old fashioned way. Hard work, mailing the records out to radio stations, fans listening to the music and then calling radio stations has kept the single alive and it continues to move up gradually in the charts every week. The song has stayed in the national charts now for over six months and last week generated over 20,000 spins at radio stations in the United States where Sound Scan and Nielsen track every spin every day.
