Winterization Tips to Keep Your Trex Deck in Good Shape

Sunburst Construction, a Virginia-based exterior home remodeling company shares the best things you can do to keep your deck in good shape during the winter months.

(PRUnderground) November 28th, 2022

Many of us tend not to think about our outdoor living areas during the winter simply because we’re not using them. However, there are a few things you can do during the winter to help keep your Trex deck in great shape so that it’s ready to use during the spring, summer, and fall. If you’re not sure where to begin, we hope these deck winterization tips will help you feel more prepared.

Clean Your Deck Before It Snows

When snow is in the forecast, take a few minutes to clean off your deck before the storm hits. Fortunately, if you have a beautiful Trex deck, this is a simple chore. All you have to do is sweep away any dirt and debris on your deck or use a mixture of soap and warm water to gently scrub it away. By doing this before a snowstorm, it will be much easier to keep your deck clean once the snow melts.

Trim Trees Around Your Deck

Before the next snowstorm, you should also inspect the trees around your deck and trim any branches hanging over it. During bad snow or ice storms, it’s not uncommon for heavy branches to crack and fall on your deck. By trimming them before a storm hits, you won’t have to worry about potential damage to your deck.

Remove Snow and Ice the Right Way

Once a winter storm does hit, it’s important to know how to clean your deck the right way. For just a light dusting of snow, you can clear off your deck by gently sweeping it away with a broom. If there are several inches of heavy snow or ice on your deck, then you’ll need to use a shovel.

However, a metal shovel could scratch your deck boards. Use a plastic shovel instead to minimize the risk of damage. As you’re shoveling, move in the direction of the board to help prevent accidental scratches as well.

Another option is to use calcium chloride or rock salt on your deck to help melt excess snow or ice. Just remember to rinse it off instead of letting it sit for too long to prevent damage to your deck.
