Pillir Sheds Light on SAP Physical Inventory Best Practices in Latest Guide

Guide designed to help warehouse managers improve SAP physical inventory process with the focus on improving efficiency and accuracy and utilising mobile apps for inventory management.

Pillir, a leading provider of low-code supply-chain tools, has released a guide to help SAP-centric organisations keep their inventory records accurate and current by leveraging SAP physical inventory process.

With the guide, the company stresses the importance of precise inventory data and comprehensive inventory visibility for efficient production planning and order fulfilment.

SAP physical inventory is a structured process of checking the physical stock of a product against the logical stock in the SAP system. Thus the material stocks can be adjusted using the appropriate movement type in case any discrepancy is observed.

By facilitating sales and purchase forecasting, up-to-date inventory records help the management stock or correct products on time.

Pillir marks the role of the physical inventory process in helping an enterprise count its own stock and special stocks (for example, returnable packaging, external consignment stock from a seller, or consignment stock from a consumer) in the SAP system. However, inventory for a company’s stock and special stocks must be taken in different physical inventory documents.

Highlighting the difference between the processes of tracking the inventory within SAP Material Management (MM) and SAP Warehouse Management (WM), Pillir sheds light on various SAP physical inventory methods: Periodic, Continuous, Cycle Count, Inventory Sampling, and so on.

While in a Periodic inventory, all stocks within an enterprise are counted individually and physically on the balance sheet key date blocking material movement, with Cycle count, counting should be executed at periodic intervals within a fiscal year.

On the other side, in the Continuous interval process, enterprises must count their stocks continuously throughout the entire fiscal year.

Available in SAP MM only, Sampling enables the management to count the randomly selected inventory on the balance sheet key date, Pillir adds.

And once the count is complete and inventory discrepancies are updated in the back-end system, they are depicted both on a value and quantity basis and at the plant, material, storage, and inventory number level, the company adds.

The guide identifies the traditional periodic/annual physical inventory process as a time- and labour-intensive task—discrepancies need recounts and reconciliation, resulting in an upsurge in operational costs.

According to Pillir, a mobile-first approach can be an effective replacement for the traditional paper-based process. It can reduce friction, help eliminate errors and accelerate inventory management in SAP business applications. The result is improved business performance and measurable (and quick) ROI rolling in the business.

Even though SAP physical inventory is a comprehensive method of tracking stocks a business has on hand, the SAP WM and SAP MM are not mobile-friendly.

Pillir stresses the importance of leveraging a third-party tool that can introduce mobility in inventory management while digitising warehouse and logistics functions via SAP integration.

Such a platform can upgrade the near-real-time visibility with SAP WM/MM to real-time visibility to deliver a user-centric, customised experience. For example, Pillir’s suite of warehouse management web and mobile apps can update stocks accurately and provide in-depth insights into stock levels and disparities while keeping the digital core clean.

Designed to help slash warehouse costs and achieve faster fulfilment, Pillir Warehouse Management tools provide clients’ operations with benefits they can measure.

Furthermore, enabling complete integration with SAP ECC and S/4HANA, Pillir’s platform delivers all essential, out-of-the-box, and mobile-native functionalities for optimised warehouse operations.

Built on Pillir’s LC platform, these easily customizable apps can fit into any business process or workflow in a fraction of the time.

To quote a client, “We digitised and streamlined door management and loading/unloading activities – tracking of all these in our SAP system in real time instead of intermittently when someone had a chance to get to the terminal. This has helped us improve productivity in the warehouse significantly as well as real time visibility for our core business stakeholders in HQ.”
