miituo Launches Pay-Per-Kilometer Car Insurance in Mexico

By: Get News
Miituo aims to take innovation in automobile insurance in Mexico a step further by introducing a new model that allows users to pay only for the kilometers they drive, offering a more personalized and cost-effective insurance experience.

miituo, a leading Insurtech company in Mexico, has launched a new model aimed at providing drivers with more flexible and affordable coverage options. The company is also offering a fixed payment plan that gives users the ability to switch between the two options as needed.

“By paying only for the kilometers they actually drive, our customers can enjoy coverage that fits their driving habits,” said Leo Cortina, CEO and co-founder of miituo. “If they don’t drive in a given month, they pay nothing, but they’re still fully insured. It’s a system designed to meet the needs of a wide range of drivers.”

The pay-per-kilometer model, which is the first of its kind in Mexico, charges users based on distance traveled. Rates start at $0.19 per kilometer for limited coverage and $0.24 for comprehensive coverage, making it particularly attractive to infrequent drivers. For those who drive regularly, miituo’s fixed payment plan starts at 250 pesos per month, offering a consistent rate regardless of distance driven.

Customers can easily sign up through the miituo app, where they can get a quote, select a coverage plan, and manage their policy. Users are required to upload a monthly photo of their vehicle’s odometer to track mileage, removing the need for any additional tracking devices. The simplicity of this system has contributed to miituo’s growing customer base.

Cortina noted that miituo’s approach addresses a significant issue in Mexico, where a large portion of vehicles remain uninsured. “We’re offering drivers more control over their insurance costs, with the flexibility to change plans or cancel coverage without penalties. It’s an important step forward in promoting responsible vehicle ownership and road safety.”

miituo also introduced its "miiflex" service, which lets customers transition seamlessly between the pay-per-kilometer and fixed payment plans as their driving habits change. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for those whose circumstances, such as a change in employment or relocation, might impact how much they drive.

“Our model is designed to adapt to life’s changes,” Cortina said. “We’ve eliminated the rigid structure of traditional car insurance, and we believe this is what makes us a better option for so many drivers.”

In addition to offering flexibility in payments, miituo has made customer service a top priority. The company’s digital platform provides quick access to support, making it easier for users to get answers to their questions or resolve any issues that arise. Cortina emphasized that miituo is committed to simplifying the insurance process, from getting a quote to making payments.

“Insurance doesn’t have to be complicated,” he said. “We’ve designed a system that’s user-friendly and transparent, giving people the information and control they need at every step.”

The launch of miituo’s pay-per-kilometer insurance comes at a time when affordability is a pressing concern for many drivers in Mexico. High insurance premiums have left many feeling that coverage is out of reach, but miituo’s model offers an alternative that addresses this issue. By charging for actual usage, miituo helps drivers reduce their insurance costs, while still maintaining the protection they need.

miituo’s partnership with Atlas Insurance, a well-established name in the industry, ensures that the company’s offerings are backed by reliable coverage. Cortina said the collaboration strengthens miituo’s position in the market by giving customers peace of mind, knowing their policies are secure.

“We’re able to offer competitive rates without sacrificing the quality of coverage,” he said. “Our customers can rest assured that they’re protected by a reputable insurer.”

The introduction of pay-per-kilometer insurance is part of miituo’s broader goal to reshape how insurance works in Mexico. As part of its ongoing expansion, the company plans to add new products and services in response to customer feedback and market demand. The app not only serves as a platform for managing policies but also offers insights into driving habits, helping users make informed decisions about their coverage.

Looking ahead, miituo aims to stay at the forefront of the Insurtech space by continuing to innovate and improve the customer experience. Cortina highlighted the importance of staying agile and responsive to changes in both the insurance industry and customer expectations.

“As we continue to grow, our focus will remain on providing solutions that make insurance more accessible, affordable, and tailored to the needs of our users,” he said.

The pay-per-kilometer model is not just about saving money; it also encourages safer driving habits. By aligning insurance costs with actual usage, the model incentivizes drivers to reduce unnecessary trips, which can lower the risk of accidents. Cortina believes this can have a positive impact on road safety in Mexico, benefiting both individual drivers and the broader community.

As miituo continues to expand its footprint, the company remains committed to making car insurance more accessible to all drivers, regardless of how often they use their vehicles.
