Los Angeles, CA, USA - February 8, 2023 - A victim of abuse may find that having a sponsor is a meaningful and helpful method to receive support as they travel the path toward healing and recovery. "Sponsoring a survivor is not just about giving them a handout, it's about giving them a hand up, and empowering them to build a better future for themselves," explained Unsilenced Voices founder, Michelle Jewsbury.
"We currently have over 50 survivors on the waitlist for this program," added Jewsbury. "Donors will have quarterly updates on their sponsored survivor in Sierra Leone including letters and photos."
The following are some of the reasons why Jewsbury encourages others to sign up as a survivor sponsor:
Financial support: Many survivors of abuse struggle with financial insecurity, especially if they have left an abusive situation and are trying to rebuild their lives. Sponsoring a survivor can provide them with financial assistance for things like housing, transportation, and other basic needs.
Emotional support: Survivors of abuse often feel isolated and alone. Sponsoring a survivor can provide them with a sense of connection and community, knowing that someone cares about them and is willing to invest in their well-being.
Access to resources: Sponsoring a survivor can give them access to resources they might not otherwise have, such as counseling, legal assistance, or job training programs.
Breaking the cycle: Sponsoring a survivor can help break the cycle of abuse by giving them the tools and support they need to build a better future for themselves and their children.
Being a role model: Sponsoring a survivor can be an opportunity to be a role model and to show the survivor that they are worthy and capable of a better life.
In 2022, Unsilenced Voices gifted over $33,000 to 26 survivors in the USA for transportation, childcare, and housing needs. They are launching a new coaching and subsidies program to provide survivors with financial support after completing 3 months of comprehensive coaching about healing, life skills, and financial literacy.
In Sierre Leone, Unsilenced Voices currently has 31 girls enrolled in vocational training. These young women have been rescued from the scx industry and extreme poverty. These survivors receive medical support, tuition, training materials, counseling, and lunch. The age ranges for the survivors are 14 years old up to 37 years old.
