KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do’s Black Belts Lead the Way and Help Bring Support to Verde Valley Teachers

By: Get News
Martial artists volunteer with a local charitable program that provides school supplies to classrooms.

A team of black-belts-in-training from KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do in Cottonwood is demonstrating that martial arts is so much more than just kicking and punching. This group of twenty-two martial arts students has adopted their dojo’s mission to become leaders in their community by volunteering with Manzanita Outreach’s School Supplies for Teachers program. Two-thousand pounds of donated supplies valued at over $13,000 were sorted and organized by the KC’s group and distributed to teachers across seven schools in the area by Manzanita Outreach.

“Our community has some really big challenges ahead of us,” states Ben Burke, Manzanita Outreach Executive Director. “The only way we are going to be able to find our resiliency is by thinking creatively and working together. This project is a great example of creative collaboration.”

According to a survey done by AdoptAClassroom.org, teachers spent an average of $750 out of pocket for supplies during the 2020/2021 school year, the most ever. Additionally, 30 percent of those surveyed teachers spent $1,000 or more that year.

“During the challenges of the pandemic, we’ve really focused on how the tenets of martial arts that we teach at our dojo can help us overcome,” stated Karen Conover, Head Instructor of KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do. “We aim to empower our students to set the example of honesty, respect and friendship in our community. So the group was happy to jump right in and help our local teachers who really needed it.”

The team of KC’s students range in age from 9–59 and are training for their upcoming black belt test. As one of the test requirements, they are charged with participating in a service project that extends, enhances and promotes the values they are learning at KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do. The team, known in the dojo as “The Green Machine,” brought their leadership, positivity, creativity and strength to the School Supplies for Teachers program.
