CBD Novel Foods – Is your CBD oil food safe?

Jason Delaney, founder and CEO of Seshat Botanicals, forecasts a big upheaval coming on the CBD space relating to approved novel food applications.

November 11, 2021

In the UK and Europe, almost all CBD products must have an approved novel food application to be legally sold as a food-safe product. This is an aspect of the industry that often gets overlooked, and the purpose of it is to prove a product does not cause harm and is fit for human consumption. Currently, there are absolutely zero approved CBD novel food applications in the UK, Ireland or anywhere else in Europe. With consumer safety a priority, food authorities are proactively identifying CBD products that are high in THC content and issuing recalls. In Ireland alone, eight different products from various brands were recalled back in July because they expressed unsafe levels of THC in the ingredients, deeming them unsafe for human consumption. Similar enforcement is coming for non-approved novel food applications and CBD products not notified to the authorities

It’s a massive problem within the industry, but Jason Delaney - founder and CEO of Seshat Botanicals - foresees a solution to the issue. Primarily, this revolves around the idea of creating safe CBD products that aren’t considered novel foods and testing to ensure safe levels of THC in the final product.

What makes a CBD product a novel food?
Where CBD or cannabinoid products differ significantly from their plant source, they are considered novel foods. This includes any product that is synthetic, isolated, cannabinoids enriched or highly processed. To give some sense as to what this means for the market, about 99% of CBD oil products fall under this category.

With the UK and Europe currently having no approved CBD novel food applications, it means that the majority of CBD oil products on the market are unconfirmed safe for humans to use or consume.

Cold pressing: The solution
The concept of CBD novel foods is a new one within this industry. Before this was even mentioned, Jason founded Seshat Botanicals with the aim of offering high-quality hemp products that were 100% food-safe. Over the last three years, he specifically spent time not putting a product on the market until he could ensure a certified organic and food-safe CBD hemp offering.

His secret? Mechanically cold pressing the hemp plants. This is deemed a food-safe extraction method and has been used for centuries to produce the highest quality oils. Most famously, cold pressing has been used to create Extra Virgin olive oil. This method is not considered novel as it doesn’t chemically alter the extraction and only removes the plant biomass; nothing else is added or taken away.

Seshat Botanicals has launched Seshat CBD+, a certified organic, third-party tested, food-safe hemp supplement. It is rich in cannabinoids, terpenes and phytonutrients as they naturally occur. Currently, this is one of the very few CBD brands that supply mechanically cold-pressed CBD hemp oil to the UK, Irish and European markets.

About Seshat Botanicals
Founded on the premise that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, Seshat Botanicals aims to be recognised as a trusted leader in food-safe CBD hemp products. Utilising mechanical cold-pressed extraction methods, the company is able to offer CBD oil that’s safety tested, organic and considered a whole food.
