Gqeberha Residents Fed Up with Illegal Dumping Launch Cleanup Campaign to Restore the Friendly City

For the last 3 months, an army of dedicated Gqeberha residents and volunteers from The Way to Happiness Foundation took a stand against the illegal dumping culture that is slowly dilapidating their beloved friendly city.

For the last 3 months, an army of dedicated Gqeberha residents and volunteers from The Way to Happiness Foundation took a stand against the illegal dumping culture that is slowly dilapidating their beloved friendly city. Deeply concerned about the health risks posed by this and the brutal stigma that is attached to dirty cities, they rolled up their sleeves and cleaned up their neighborhood to fight back against illegal dumping. They intend to continue their efforts as frequently as possible to arrest the decline of their friendly city.

Illegal dumping has been a scourge for years now. Reported as one of the cities with the most polluted air quality in South Africa, Gqeberha is also combating high crime rates, drug abuse, unemployment and many other factors mixed up illegal dumping and foul smells.

Fed up with the ‘rubbish’, The Way to Happiness Foundation volunteers decided “enough was enough” and they began a series of cleanup campaigns around their neighborhood to restore order and bring common sense back to their community in their fight for a better environment.

They started with Govan Mbeki Street in Gqeberha, these volunteers consisted of community members from various sectors including a pharmacist, local tour guides and shuttle services officers, ward committee members and many other community members. Even the Mayor walked by and was proud to see his community take initiative in cleaning up Gqeberha. This initiative is gaining momentum and is in its second month on its path to making the Friendly City! Friendly again.

Armed with determination, Sabelo Bless and his army of volunteers decided to act and are reportedly seeing results already. “Cleanliness is next to Godliness; it is very difficult to focus in a dirty environment hence the constant mood of depression we encounter daily here. I believe that a cleaner environment contributes to a person’s overall health and outlook on life,” said Sabelo.

“It is no secret that our city is under heavy attack from many social ills. This is a terrible problem we are facing but we can either sulk about it or stand up as a community or take responsibility for our community,” continued Kish.

When asked about what keeps his team motivated, Sabelo mentioned that they adopted an international programme known as The Way to Happiness used internationally for community improvement and moral regeneration. “Apart from cleanups, we use this programme to rehabilitate morality and this program is effective when it comes to that. It has the ability to restore common sense”, Sabelo.

“We decided to take responsibility because we are sick of this and it is up to all of us to care for, safeguard and improve the environment,” Sabelo added.

According to him, ‘The Way to Happiness’ programme is a common sense guide to better living with 21 precepts, known and used the world over. It provides people with a sensible and practical guide to better and happier living. The 21 guiding principles, outlined by Mr. L. Ron Hubbard, contains the first nonreligious moral code, one attuned to a world desperately in need of a moral compass. This is a widespread foundation with offices in hundreds of countries across the world.

One of the widely popular precepts number 12, “Safeguard and improve your environment”, has been implemented by Sabelo and his group of volunteers at the inner city to stellar results.

“I want to see more and more people joining in and contributing to restoring our environment for the benefit of all,” concluded Bless.
