Murder and political intrigue are front and centre in Hanrahan’s third entry in his mystery/legal thriller series featuring Bill Coine, Boston P.I. A weekend getaway to Massachusetts’ Berkshire Mountains for Coine and his wife Jeanie ends badly when he follows the smell of death and finds a corpse hanging from a beam in the adjacent hotel room. The dead man is none other than Ted Prescott, chairman of Fairlane Township’s board of selectmen. He was the driving force behind the town’s sanctuary ordinance protecting undocumented immigrants in the community. The town’s police chief, Tom Breshetti, concludes it was suicide. Prescott’s widow hires Coine who proves it was murder. Coine soon is conflicted when the widow insists her husband was murdered by Jonathan Tanner, the only selectman who voted against the ordinance. He had publicly threatened his fellow selectmen if harm should ever come to any member of his family at the hands of an illegal alien. It did when his son was killed during a botched carjacking. Coine insists that the murder was not for political revenge and allies himself with Tanner to help prove his innocence. His success depends on solving a complex puzzle but can he find the real killer in time to save Tanner? Exciting twists and turns and the obligatory surprise ending await the reader
“Hanrahan … is a Boston trial lawyer and he clearly draws upon that experience here, providing his novel with believable law enforcement and courtroom underpinnings. He handles these technical details well while wrangling a large cast of characters. In addition, he has a good sense of pacing and delivers engaging dialogue throughout” – Kirkus Reviews.
About The Author
Hanrahan is a Brooklyn native, a former captain in a combat branch of the United States Army and an experienced Boston trial attorney. He earned his parachutist badge at Fort Benning, Georgia and graduated from the Jungle Warfare School in Fort Sherman, Panama Canal Zone. Although he graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Industrial Design, his sudden change in career direction was prompted by the army. Because there was a shortage of Judge Advocate General lawyers in Panama, Hanrahan was appointed special defence counsel for the court martial board. That changed his life forever. After his five years of service, he attended Boston University Law School, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1966. After one year with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., he returned to Boston to begin his career as a trial lawyer.
