Lygos Expands Leadership Team to Drive Commercial Growth

Rich Weber brings two decades of experience commercializing sustainable ingredients and materials with experience from Cargill/Natureworks

Lygos, Inc., a vertically integrated provider of sustainable specialty ingredients, today announced the leadership appointment of Rich Weber as Senior Vice President of Business Development. In this capacity, Mr. Weber will drive the strategic business planning and execution efforts to build on recent milestones and position the company for long-term success.

“Over the last few months, Lygos has built strong momentum as part of our ongoing commitment to meet the increasing demand for our sustainable specialty ingredients,” said Eric Steen, Ph.D., CEO of Lygos. “After securing a $160 million growth capital investment, we have a tremendous opportunity in front of us and are excited to add Rich to our leadership team. He will be instrumental in growing our organic-acid-based business across agricultural, industrial, and consumer product sectors by cultivating strategic collaborations that enable more customers to solve supply chain issues and replace toxic petrochemistries.”

Mr. Weber was most recently Vice President at Ethos Biosciences, a provider of diagnostic assays and reagents for specialty indications and applications. Prior to that, he was the Chief Commercial Officer and President of North America for Green Biologics, a provider of sustainable ingredients used to produce industrial products and consumer goods. Mr. Weber also spent nine years at Cargill and NatureWorks, a Cargill joint venture, where he held commercial, strategy, and business development leadership positions with increasing responsibility. Prior to Cargill, he began his career as an engineer at Biogen. Mr. Weber earned his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and completed his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Lygos is building a world-class company focused on providing high-quality, sustainable, specialty ingredients that improve common, everyday products,” said Weber. “I’m excited to join this talented team to help drive adoption of our multi-functional organic acid-based products and empower more customers to solve the world’s environmental challenges alongside key performance needs.”

Lygos’ proprietary fermentation technology platform utilizes the latest advances in bioengineering and data science to convert sustainable sugars into multi-functional organic acids. These bio-based ingredients are designed to make existing products more sustainable while also offering significant performance, supply chain, and environmental advantages over traditional industrial chemicals.
