Lafarge Tracks Clean Energy Initiatives and Success at Dawson Road Location

Lafarge Canada continues to demonstrate their commitment to keeping sustainability at the forefront of all its operations. Working with Efficiency Manitoba, Lafarge Canada’s Dawson Road location installed energy-efficient machinery and LED lights at the facility - saving nearly half a million kWh of electricity over five years.

This has been an important step towards the organization’s commitment to reduce climate-warming emissions. “As we work towards becoming a net-zero company by 2030, this is a key step in our journey and confirms Lafarge Canada’s long-standing commitment to sustainable development." says Tina Larson, Vice President of Manitoba & Saskatchewan. “The support of our government makes this a streamlined process.”

Efficiency Manitoba’s commitment to energy savings is well aligned with Lafarge’s.“Lafarge is an active participant in our energy efficiency programs.” adds Dirk Hantscher, Industrial Systems Engineer at Efficiency Manitoba. “We have worked together to identify and implement a variety of projects that reduce energy and save money.” Through consistent integration of energy-efficient technology, Lafarge has continued to demonstrate the importance of reducing energy consumption, receiving $395,689 from Efficiency Manitoba for their Manitoba operations, $216,499 specifically at Dawson Road. The kWh and m3 reduction from the upgrades at Dawson Road equate to saving approximately 726 tonnes of CO₂ - the equivalent of taking 158 cars off the road.

Lafarge’s upgrades translate not only to reduced energy use but an increase in production, supporting the employees and families that live and work in the greater Winnipeg area. The numbers across our operations prove to us that investing in energy efficiency is a simple methodology to cut energy waste,” explains Larson. “Modernizing the location’s machinery and lights has transformed it. We’ve learned a lot from these projects, and I can’t wait to see the improvements expand across our operations.”
