Sandeep Kumar Mishra is shortlisted for International Plough Poetry Prize-2024

Now in its 21 year, the Plough Poetry Prize is an international open competition for poems held in UK. The results are in! Indian poet Sandeep Kumar Mishra’s political poem “Immigration’ is highly commended for this prestigious prize. Other shortlisted poets include “Don’t tell Dad” by Trystan Lewis, “Gliding’ by Mary-Jane Homes, “My mother tongue is a lonesome bastard” by Dragana Lazici.

The chief judge Roger McGough commented, 'So many good poems, so many difficult choices, and so inevitably, choosing a winner proved as difficult as ever, and I do hope that all the poets take away a sense of achievement. My favourite poems were as different in style as a judge could hope for. From taking to the air disguised as a vulture, to a tainted mother tongue, and to paternal love, undiminished to the end. Each poem was confident in the story it had to tell and told succinctly. The winning poems spoke directly to me and had both clarity and rhythm. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who submitted a poem and thanks to all at the Plough Arts Centre who work tirelessly to promote poetry’.

In ‘Immigration’ Indian poet Sandeep Kumar Mishra shares his own experience and history with Australian immigration. He left his family home in order to escape the financial crisis and in search of a freer, more peaceful life. Upon arrival in Australia, he was met with unemployment, hunger, health issues and racism and the various struggles outlined in the poem. He is still uncertain about his future as he has been refused visa to stay in Australia.

This historical poetry prize is sponsored by The Plough Arts Centre with the financial support of Great Torrington Town Council, Torrington Town and Lands Charities, Devon County Council, Torridge District Council, Arts Council England, The UK Culture Recovery Fund, The National Lottery Community Fund, Boshier Hinton, Barnstaple Town Council, Davie Barnstaple Trust, Garfield Weston.
